FAQs

What are the most popular console tables now?

One of the most popular console tables today is Mid-Century Modern. Known for warm, medium-toned woods such as walnut, teak or cherry, and signature tapered legs, this style is well-loved for offering a refined, designer look without feeling overly flashy.

Another popular option is the Industrial console table, characterised by thick wood tops paired with black metal frames. This style is inspired by old factories and warehouses, resulting in a  rugged appearance. The slightly distressed wood surfaces are also excellent at hiding scratches or dust, which makes it a favorite entryway console table for busy families or pet owners.

For those who prefer a bright and clean look, the Scandinavian or Minimalist table is a top seller. These designs usually feature very light-colored woods like ash or blonde oak, clean lines, and slim profiles. Their visual lightness makes them ideal for small, narrow hallways or darker entryways.

The Modern Farmhouse or Rustic table is also highly popular, especially among homeowners seeking a warm and welcoming atmosphere. These tables often feature heavier proportions, reclaimed or textured wood, visible knots and details such as “X” shaped supports.  Washed finishes in white, grey, or light brown are common, making this style best suited for larger entryways where a more substantial presence is desired.

How do I pick the right entryway table for my space?

To choose the right console table size, start by measuring your available wall or entryway space accurately. A console table typically looks best when it occupies about two-thirds of the wall width, creating visual balance. For comfortable movement, it is recommended to leave at least 90 cm of clearance in hallways or entryways. If your hallway is very narrow, look for a slim or hallway console with a depth of 25-30 cm

For compact homes or smaller entryways, hallway side tables measuring approximately 120 to 140 cm in length are both practical and elegant. In larger spaces such as living rooms, foyers, offices or common areas, longer wood slab console tables between 150 to 180cm are popular, offering more surface area for styling and functionality.

To coordinate your console table with existing flooring, consider contrast. For example, pairing dark walnut furniture with light oak floors creates visual interest. Also pay attention to undertones — cool-toned floors (grey or blue) pair best with cool-toned woods, while warm floors (red or orange undertones) work better with warm wood tones.

What are the differences between wood entry tables?

Wood entry tables can generally be differentiated across three main aspects: material build, functional design, and joinery or finish quality.

Material Build

This refers to what the table is made of internally. Solid wood tables are crafted from real wood throughout, offering durability, weight, and natural variation. Veneered tables use a thin layer of premium wood bonded over a more affordable core material, providing a similar appearance at a lower price point.

Functional designs

This relates to how the table is used. Minimal console tables with just a top and legs are ideal for small entryways, as they keep the space visually open. Organiser tables with drawers or shelves are practical for busy households needing storage near the entrance. Floating or wall-mounted tables are best for very tight hallways where floor space is limited.

Joinery Quality

This concerns how the table feels and looks up close. Live-edge tables have a raw, organic texture that highlights the natural shape of the wood. Smooth or satin-finished tables feel soft and refined, while distressed finishes intentionally feature marks and texture for a rustic appearance.

Can I customise a natural wood console table or live edge console table using your slabs?

Yes. Grey & Sanders’ bespoke services allow you to customise natural wood or live-edge console tables using our solid wood slabs.

You can select the slab length and wood type (American Black Walnut, American Ashwood or Indonesian Teak) and pair it with your preferred console base or leg design such as black or brass square legs. First, start by measuring your desired console table length. Next, choose your wood slab from our collection of over 20+ wood slab types. Lastly, pair it with your preferred console base or leg design.

You may also work closely with our stylist to ensure the slab proportions and dimensions suit your space perfectly. At Grey & Sanders, you are not limited to off-the-shelf designs — each console table can be tailored for your entryway, foyer, hallway, or living space.

What maintenance is required for a wood slab console table?

Maintenance for a wood slab console table is similar to that of other solid wood pieces.

Wipe the surface regularly with a soft, damp microfiber cloth. Clean up spills promptly to prevent staining, and use coasters or placemats to protect against heat marks and scratches. Avoid harsh cleaners or chemical-based products, and keep the console table away from direct sunlight or heat sources.

If stains occur, specialised wood care products such as Rubio Tannin Remover or Surface Care Spray can be used for gentle spot treatment.

Grey & Sanders also offers onsite refinishing services to restore the table’s finish and remove signs of wear over time.
