FAQs

What’s the difference between the types of extendable dining tables?

The key difference between types of extendable dining tables lies in their extension mechanisms, which vary in ease of use, design and space efficiency. Each mechanism caters to different needs, lifestyles and home layouts. Here are some common mechanisms used in extendable dining tables:

The Butterfly Leaf Extension. A folded leaf is kept within the table and unfolded when needed. To use, simply pull the table apart and unfold the leaf to bridge the center. This mechanism is perfect for compact homes as it requires no external storage, offering both ease of use and a seamless aesthetic whether compact or extended.

The Drop Leaf Extension. Hinged panels on one or both sides of the table can be lifted or folded down, giving you flexible seating options to suit various room sizes or occasions.

The Folding Extension. The tabletop slides to make way for the extension that unfolds to expand the tabletop by two times its size. While space efficient, this mechanism is less flexible  in terms of extension size.

The Draw Leaf or Sliding Extension. These leaves slide out smoothly from beneath the table top, offering effortless use and the added advantage of a continuous wood grain when extended — a popular choice for those drawn to the beauty and warmth of natural wood grain.

The Removable Center or End Leaf Extension. Individual panels are manually added or removed as needed either to the sides or middle of the table. While versatile, this design suits homes with more storage, as the leaves need to be stored elsewhere when not in use.

Here at Grey & Sanders, we offer the Butterfly Leaf Extension and the Table Connector Extension, allowing you to customise your table size with ease based on your space and functional needs.

How to Open and Close a Butterfly Extension Extendable Dining Table?

To extend the table: Firstly, gently pull both ends of the table apart using both hands to reveal the extension space. Secondly, flip the butterfly extension leaf up carefully. Thirdly, unfold the butterfly extension leaf fully until it lies flat. Lastly, push both ends of the table back toward the centre to secure the extension in place. Before use, ensure the extension mechanism is properly locked in place to keep your table steady and secure.

To close the table: Firstly, ensure that it is unlocked and pull both ends of the table apart slightly using both hands. Secondly, fold the butterfly extension leaf neatly back into its closed position. Thirdly, lower the folded extension leaf carefully into the storage space. Lastly, push both ends of the table together until they meet securely.

How can I prevent wear and tear on my extendable wood dining table in Singapore?

At Grey & Sanders, we offer extendable dining tables crafted with either solid wood tops or wood veneer on MDF. To care for your wood surface, always use coasters or placemats for hot or wet items and wipe away spills and stains immediately. Avoid leaving any stains overnight — once stained, the stains cannot be removed. For regular upkeep, gently clean the surface with a soft, damp cloth.

To ensure your extension dining table mechanism remains smooth and precise, gently pull or push the extension leaf using both hands and lift the table by the supporting beam beneath rather than the table top to prevent misalignment. Avoid placing heavy items on the extendable section as this can cause misalignment or strain the mechanism. For solid wood extendable dining tables, note that it is normal for a subtle misalignment of 1mm to 3mm between the table’s wooden panels. This is due to the wood’s natural characteristics and allows for the natural movement of the wood. To clean, dust the tracks occasionally with a soft cloth.

Every extendable dining table from Grey & Sanders comes with a 1 year warranty  —  a reflection of our confidence in the craftsmanship of our artisans and our dedication to supporting you after your purchase.

How do I choose the right size extendable dining table for my space?

Choosing the right extendable dining table depends on your space and how many people you wish to seat. Allow 50 to 70cm around the extended version of the table for comfortable movement. Extendable tables offer the perfect blend of intimacy and versatility - from cosy family meals to larger gatherings with friends. As a general guide, tables measuring 140 to 160cm seat 4 comfortably, tables between 180 to 200cm accommodate 6 with ease and tables from 230cm to 245cm welcome 8 guests perfectly. For instance, a 140cm table that extends to 190cm seats 4 for daily use and 6 when entertaining.
