FAQs

How to choose a dining table for my home in Singapore?

Matching Wood to Your Interior Aesthetic

Your dining table’s material should anchor your home's entire design language. For a dark, grounding Wabi-Sabi aesthetic, our bestselling American Black Walnut introduces deep, rich brown tones. Conversely, if you are styling a bright, minimalist Japandi or Scandinavian space, an American Oak table provides the perfect light, natural finish to keep the room feeling airy and expansive.

Selecting the Right Shape & Customization

For spacious floor plans and frequent hosting, a classic long rectangular table is ideal. If you are working with a compact dining zone, round or oval tables beautifully optimize seating capacity without obstructing walkways. Need a specific fit? Our local bespoke service allows you to slim down slabs, add extension leaves, or create completely custom dimensions tailored to your exact floor plan.

Calculating Seating Capacity

To ensure comfortable elbow room, always allocate roughly 60cm of width per person. Follow this standard sizing guide when planning your dining space:

  • 4-Seater Table: 1.2 meters long
  • 6-Seater Table: 1.8 meters long
  • 8-Seater Table: 2.4 meters long

Walkway Clearance & Space-Saving Solutions

For compact Singapore homes, exact spatial planning is critical. Always leave a reasonable amount of clearance behind chairs so they can slide out freely.
To maximize daily walking space while retaining the ability to host, we recommend integrating a solid wood dining bench or upgrading to an extendable dining table.

Which is better: a solid wood or an engineered wood dining table?

The Reality of Engineered Wood

Engineered wood—constructed from compressed fibers and synthetic resins—offers excellent structural stability in fluctuating environments. However, its thin surface veneer makes it susceptible to permanent scratches and water damage. Because engineered wood cannot be sanded down or structurally repaired once damaged, it is generally considered a short-term furnishing solution.

The Solid Wood Investment

A solid wood slab is a generational, architectural investment.
While natural timber inherently expands and contracts with humidity, it offers unparalleled longevity. If a solid wood table is scratched, dented, or stained, it can be easily sanded and completely refinished to look brand new, preserving its unique organic grain for decades.

How do I maintain my wood slab dining table?

Daily Prevention & Cleaning:

Maintaining a solid wood table requires minimal daily effort. Always use coasters under hot plates or wet condensation-heavy glasses to prevent heat rings and watermarks. For routine cleaning, gently wipe the surface along the grain using a soft, slightly damp cloth. If accidental spills occur, wipe them up immediately to prevent the liquid from seeping into the timber's natural pores.

Targeted Stain Removal & Annual Conditioning

If you encounter stubborn spots or organic stains, apply the Rubio Tannin Remover or Surface Care Spray immediately for safe, chemical-free extraction. To keep the wood structurally nourished and visually rich, we recommend applying the Rubio Wood Slab Care Kit once a year. This simple annual conditioning preserves the timber's natural warmth and prevents the grain from drying out in air-conditioned rooms.

Generational Restoration

Unlike engineered veneer, minor scratches or dents do not permanently ruin a solid wood slab. When your table eventually shows signs of heavy use over the years, you can utilize our professional onsite refinishing service. Our craftsmen will sand and restore the wood's natural luster directly in your home, ensuring the piece lasts for generations.

Are solid wood dining tables truly suitable for Singapore's humidity?

The Reality of Tropical Moisture
Solid wood is a naturally porous material that actively breathes. In Singapore’s fluctuating 70% to 90% ambient humidity, improperly dried timber will inevitably warp, crack, or expand. The secret to long-term structural stability in a tropical climate is not just the tree species, but the exact moisture content of the wood before it ever enters your home.

Rigorous Kiln-Drying & Stabilization
To ensure absolute reliability, every Grey & Sanders slab undergoes a meticulous, multi-step kiln-drying process. By precisely drawing out excess moisture and structurally stabilizing the timber to match local atmospheric conditions, we permanently lock in the wood's integrity. This prevents future structural movement, even in air-conditioned BTOs or condominiums.

Breathable Protection & Finishing
Rather than suffocating the wood under cheap, synthetic lacquers that eventually peel in the heat, we seal our tables with Rubio Monocoat Oil. This advanced finish bonds directly with the wood’s cellular fibers. It creates an incredibly durable, water-resistant surface that still allows the timber to breathe naturally, ensuring it adapts beautifully to Singapore’s climate for generations.

My dining table no longer fits in my new home. What can I do?

Bespoke Wood Repurposing
Downsizing to a compact BTO or condominium often means your original dining table is too large for the new layout. Because solid wood is a generational material, it should not be discarded. As part of our zero-waste initiative, our local workshop can structurally resize your slab or seamlessly repurpose the timber into bespoke dining benches, floating shelves, or coffee tables.

HDB & Condominium Disposal Services
If repurposing is not a viable option, you must adhere to local estate regulations to avoid bulky waste fines. HDB residents can easily request free bulky item removal directly through their local Town Council. If you reside in a private condominium, consult your MCST, as most management offices provide designated disposal zones or scheduled removal services.

Hassle-Free Private Removal
If you require immediate extraction without the hassle of coordinating council schedules or manually maneuvering heavy slabs into restrictive residential lifts, we can handle the heavy lifting. Our internal logistics team offers a seamless, responsible private disposal service for large furniture pieces at a flat rate of $130.
