FAQs

Why is a sideboard cabinet with storage essential for your home?

A sideboard cabinet tucks seamlessly along walls and walkways or dining rooms and entryways to provide convenient storage without compromising the aesthetics of your home. You can keep away items such as dishes, cutlery, dining essentials or items meant for entertaining in sideboard cabinets with drawers or doors. On the surface, you may display decorative items such as paintings, photo frames, ornaments or even lamps to add a touch of style and character to your space.

Which is better for my home? Solid wood vs. engineered wood sideboards?

Solid wood slabs celebrate nature’s beauty with their rich grains, natural streaks and organic warmth. As a natural material, solid wood may expand or contract slightly in response to humidity and temperature changes. In contrast, engineered wood offers greater dimensional stability, making it less reactive to environmental shifts. However, engineered wood is generally more susceptible to surface scratches and stains compared to solid wood’s natural resilience.

At Grey & Sanders, we craft sideboards using both solid wood and engineered wood, thoughtfully combining the strengths of each. Our solid wood sideboards, such as the Hudson Sideboard made from solid Acacia wood, are meticulously dried and treated through multiple stages to ensure stability and long-lasting beauty. Designs like the Tivoli, Ipanema and Havana sideboards feature a balance of solid wood and wood veneer over engineered bases - merging the tactile authenticity of natural wood with the structural reliability of engineered materials like plywood or MDF.

How do I choose the right sideboard cabinet size for my space?

When choosing the right sideboard cabinet size for your dining or living space, start by measuring the length of the wall space where you plan to place it and of other surrounding furniture such as your dining table and sofa. To maintain visual balance and proportion in the room, ensure it is not longer than your dining table or sofa.

At Grey & Sanders, our cabinets range from 80cm, such as the Graye Modular Cabinet, to 110cm with the Graye Cabinet. Our sideboards range from 152cm, as seen in the Havana and Ipanema collections, up to 190cm with the Logan Sideboard

For height, aim for your sideboard or cabinet to be roughly the same as your dining table or sofa, allowing easy access to daily essentials. Alternatively, a slightly taller sideboard can add visual interest and dimension to your space. Our sideboards and cabinets range from 75cm in height - including the Tivoli, Ipanema and Havana - up to 92cm with the Graye Modular Cabinet.

Lastly, remember to measure the clearance needed for drawers and cabinet doors to ensure they open fully without obstructions for smooth, practical use.

How to style your sideboard cabinet for living room or dining room?

Depending on your lifestyle and functional needs, style your living room or dining room sideboard cabinet to serve both beauty and purpose. If you use it to store everyday essentials like keys or remotes, add a decorative bowl like our Teak Bowl Woodware or Charcoal Dish Woodware to store them. Complement the setup with natural textures using a Teak Vase or add sculptural charm with our Haze Ornament Ceramic

To create a stunning focal point that elevates your space, frame your long sideboard cabinets with a mirror or art piece from our Gallery Collection. You can also introduce greenery for a refreshing, organic touch. To transform your living room, dining or kitchen sideboard cabinet into a cozy, sensory nook, add aromatherapy candles for a calming ambience or place it near a power socket and illuminate it with one of our Ember Lamps or Eclipse Lamps for soft, atmospheric lighting.

How do I maintain my wooden sideboard cabinet?

To care for your wood sideboard cabinet, dust it regularly with microfibre cloth and clean gently with a soft, damp cloth. Wipe off spills immediately to prevent stains or water damage. Use coasters or mats under decorative items and drinks to prevent scratches and moisture rings. Keep your wood sideboard cabinet out of direct sunlight to preserve its natural wood beauty.

If your wooden sliding doors — like those from our Havana and Ipanema collection — start to feel misaligned, apply a little wax along the top, bottom and railing to keep them gliding smoothly with the following steps. Firstly, use a screwdriver to remove the two rail stoppers located behind the sideboard. Next, gently lift and remove both sliding doors before applying a thin layer of wax to the top and bottom edges of the doors and the railing tracks. Reinsert the doors onto the railings and screw the rail stoppers back in place. Lastly, slide the doors open and close a few times to evenly distribute the wax for smooth movement.
