One of the most common indicators of durability in the industry is the Janka scale which ranges from 0 to 4,000. A ranking of 0 means the lumber is very soft and not suitable for dining table usage. A ranking of 4,000 means that the lumber is extremely hard and difficult to mill.
American black walnut has a Janka scale rating of 1,010 which is similar to many other wood that are being used for dining table. Furthermore, black walnut has good shock resistance and is moderately dense which makes it an ideal material for furniture. It is also considered more resistant to denting and wear from normal daily use, and with sufficient care for the wood, the furniture will age gracefully and prove to be a timeless piece.
American black walnut is easily worked with both hand and machine tools as it readily accepts nails, screws, and glue. Once the milling process is finished, American black walnut polishes beautifully. The only caveat is that the wood dries relatively slowly, requiring the process to be slower and performed with more care.
